平安時代に遣唐使が中国の昌国より持ち帰ったとされ、この名が付けられました。地鶏系の尾羽が18対なのに対して、小国の尾羽は23対あるのも特徴。多くの日本鶏の祖先種とされています。

It is believed that they were brought back from Chang guo, China by a Japanese envoy during the Heian period and named after that. Normally Jidori have 18 pairs of tail feathers but Shokoku have 23 pairs. Thought to be the ancestor of many Japanese chickens.
