Hampshire pig

The Hampshire pig is a pig breed characterized by erect ears and a black body with a whitish band around the middle, covering the front legs. It has short legs and a long head. The sows have a weight up to 280 kg and boars weigh more than 300 kg.

Originally it was bred at the South coast of England. But since 1825 animals of this breed were exported to the US state Kentucky. The Hampshire hogs are probably the oldest pig breed in the US and today one of the most common pigs in the US. Besides it is kept in altogether 54 countries and is therefore the 4th most common swine breed in the world. The reason for this success is the high quality of the meat. Furthermore the breed is noted for being well-muscled and as a rapid grower. Besides the Hampshire pigs are good tempered and the sows have been praised for their capacity as mothers.
