Soay Sheep

The Soay sheep is the oldest still existing breed of domestic sheep in the world. It descended from a population of feral sheep on the only 100 ha large island of Soay, northwest from Scotland. Regarding the horns and the colour, it remains physically similar to the wild ancestors of domestic sheep, the Mediterranean mouflon. –

They are mostly brown with a white belly and a white patch on the rump and under the chin (referred to as wild pattern). The breed has extremely fine fleece and, in contrast to mouflon and as a sign for domestication, its inner fleece is highly developed. They have short tails and naturally shed their wool, which can be hand plucked in spring and early summer.
