ウェサンはフランスのブルターニュ地方の家畜ヒツジで、ヨーロッパ最小の種である。オスの体高は42-49 cm、体重は15-20 kg。メスはさらに小さく体高41-45 cm、体重13-16 kg。通常、毛色は黒かこげ茶色で、オスだけに長い角がある。20世紀始めまではウェサン島だけに生息していたが、1880年に島と本土をつなぐフェリーが就航すると、小さなウェサンは本土で流行り始め異種交配が行われるようになった。1977年に確認された個体数はたった486頭であったが、民間の畜産家や動物園による徹底した繁殖活動の結果、個体数は再び増加した。
Quessant sheep
The Quessant sheep is a domestic sheep breed from French Brittany. It is f the smallest European sheep breed. Rams have a shoulder height of 42-49 cm and a weight of 15-20 kg. The ewes are even smaller and measure at their shoulder 41-45 cm and weigh 13-16 kg. In general, they are black or dark brown. Rams have rather long horns and females are polled (domesticated without horns). Until the beginning of the 20th century they existed only on their home Island of Quessant. But when in 1880 the first ferry connection between the island and the mainland was established the small Quessant sheep become a fashion on the main land and crossbreeding with other sheep breeds started. In 1977 only 486 Quessant sheep were registered. Because of intensive breeding of some private breeders and zoos In the meantime the stock rised again.
